Chair for Surface Science and Corrosion
The Department of Materials Science comprises the five departments of the Faculty of Technology, with the Departments of Chemistry and Bioengineering, Electrical Engineering – Electronics, Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering. In addition, the Department currently consists of nine chairs, covering the entire range of the subject in research and teaching.
After the founding of the Faculty of Technology in 1966, the Department of Material Science was only extended in 1970 by the Chair for Surface Science and Corrosion. At that time, Prof. Dr. Helmut Kaesche took over the Chair from 1970 to 1994. After the management of Prof. Dr. Martin Stratmann (1994 – 1999), the Chair has been headed by Prof. Dr. Patrik Schmuki since the year 2000. Thus, the chair covers the entire range of material and materials science as well as chemical research with a focus on surfaces and interfaces, the electrochemistry of semiconductors and metals, micro- and nanotechnology as well as corrosion and, above all, corrosion protection.
We are part of the Chair for Surface Science and Corrosion. Our research team for Corrosion is headed by Prof. Dr. Sannakaisa Virtanen.
